Drinklore
one part truth
two parts myth
a dash of dry wit
served with a twist
If folklore is the oral history of a culture, then the collection of anecdotes, myths, legends, and bold-faced lies that have ever been exchanged on the subject of imbibing ought to be called drinklore. Certainly this is an oral tradition in the classic sense, with every tale transformed by the character and prejudices of the tellers; but there is also the intriguing dynamic that both storyteller and audience are likely drunk at the time of recitation.
My inspiration for these articles began with a realization that much of the commonly known drinklore, accepted as gospel, frequently runs afoul of actual history. Nevertheless, any attempt to get at the “truth” of the matter usually leads the researcher right back into the realm of popular myth. This investigation is, therefore, not meant to set any records straight; it’s only purpose is to find amusement in the journey itself. Any serious errors, omissions, offenses are to be expected as all of this was clearly written under the influence.
In another life I began writing these articles for a magazine called Spirits&Cocktails. Have often thought of reviving. Eager to hear responses.
